Q: What should I know about asphalt?

A: Asphalt is our recommended surface choice for roads, parking lots and driveways. We like it because it’s durable and affordable. It’s long-lasting and has a smooth surface that is easy to walk on and to repair. Maintenance will need to be done on asphalt, but it usually involves just the filling of cracks once a year. An asphalt driveway can typically last for about 20 years, but maintenance such as patching, sealing, coating, resurfacing and overlaying will need to be done to keep that fresh look.

Cracks and potholes are the biggest threats to asphalt. They arise from the weight of heavy traffic and erosion from wet weather. These cracks and holes will get worse if they are not addressed in a timely manner.

Make sure to use proper drainage with your pavement as this will ensure the longevity of your asphalt. Water can find its way into cracks and lead to more erosion, or it can freeze in cold weather and cause even more cracking.

Q: What is sealcoating?

A: Once a year, a sealcoat may be put on top of asphalt to be used as a protective shield that keeps sunlight, oil and gasoline from harming your pavement’s surface. Sealcoating can be done once a year for several years over the lifespan of the pavement. Sealcoating isn’t meant to fill cracks.

Q: How is crack sealing done?

A: Sealant is applied to cracks in asphalt that are larger than about a quarter of an inch. Sealing these cracks will keep moisture from getting inside of them that would continue to erode the asphalt and cause bigger problems.

Other repair services Williams Paving Inc. offers to fix cracks include patching and resurfacing. Patching will remove the cracked area and fill it in with new asphalt, while resurfacing will completely repave the problem area. Resurfacing is typically more cost effective over the long run than patching.

Q: How long after asphalt paving is completed can I drive on it?

A: Weather conditions and the type of job affect this but usually the length of time you should avoid driving on asphalt paving once its completed is between 24 and 48 hours.

Q: Can asphalt be poured when its raining?

A: Asphalt paving contractors can usually complete paving jobs through drizzling or raining, It may delay the scheduling of the job.

Q: Do paved asphalt driveways add value to a house?

A: Yes, a properly installed asphalt driveway significantly enhances the appeal of your property. Plus, you’ll have an easier time selling your home with an aesthetically pleasing driveway area.

Q: How thick should an asphalt driveway be?

A: The thickness of an asphalt driveway depends on the soil that's being paved on as well as the amount and weight of the vehicles going on it. Paving a driveway too thin will result in needing it redone much sooner, which is a standard rip off method.
