How Long Do I Have to Wait to Use My Asphalt Driveway?

Staying Off New Asphalt Pavement

Asphalt is an affordable and popular method of paving. It is used for roadways across the country. Everyone easily recognizes asphalt by its black color. Asphalt, otherwise known as blacktop, is made from aggregate material that is glued together using a binder. When asphalt is laid down, the aggregate-binder mix is soft, hot, and flexible. This means that heavy loads can cause indentations, bumps, and divots in the pavement. So, you must wait for a little while before you can walk, drive, or park on the blacktop.

How long do you have to wait? Usually, 24 hours is how long you should wait to use the asphalt. During warmer weather, we recommend allowing 2-3 days to pass before using the asphalt to allow it to properly cool and harden. You do not want to use the asphalt too soon because then you will need to have repairs performed right away which will cost you more money.
